3 Tips For Using A Packing Service

Florence Gomez

Hiring a packing service can be an excellent way to cut down on the amount of time that you must spend preparing for your move. However, if you have never utilized a packing service, you may not know what to expect. Here are a few tips for utilizing a professional packing service in your area.

1. Customize the Packing to Your Needs

One of the biggest misconceptions about using a packing service is that it must pack every single item in your home. However, this is not the case. You can have the packing service pack as little or as much as you want.

For example, if you feel confident packing your bedrooms and living spaces, but find the kitchen or workshop daunting, you can have the packing service pack just these spaces. Perhaps you have some items that are tricky to pack, like fragile collectibles or bulky furniture. You may also opt to have the packing service pack only the pieces that you find cumbersome to properly pack.

If there are any items that you don't want the movers to pack, like financial documents or electronics, make sure to label them as "do not pack."

2. See If There are Any Items the Packing Service Can't Pack

Some packing services have restrictions concerning what they can and cannot pack. One of the most common groups of restricted items includes weapons and hazardous materials. Knives, guns, and ammunition may be on the packing service's list of prohibited items. Potential dangerous materials, like flammable chemicals, are also perilous to move and transport.

Plants are another item that some packing services avoid packing. This is due to the sensitive, fragile nature of many plant breeds. Ideally, you should pack and transport plants yourself.

Perishables are questionable as well. These items require refrigeration and special handling that your packing service may not provide. This category does not include canned goods.

3. Secure Your Pets Before the Packing Service Arrives

Even if your pets are friendly and enjoy company, you should make sure they are secured before the packing service arrives. Your pets may try to play with or chew the packing materials, making the process more difficult for the packers and potentially putting your pets in danger.

The packing service may need to enter and exit your home to gather more packing materials, pack exterior items, or move boxes. During this time, your pets may try to slip out, possibly escaping or becoming entangled with the packer's legs. Keep everyone safe by containing your furry family members.
